What is the role of the state: the enlightenment. Thomas hobbes - people agree to be governed with a return for safety. Social contract- between government & people: states that the government gives safety but we give up rights, we enter in because of fear other people, cesare beccaria - expanded on his ideas. Utilitarianism - gov gives right of protection but also can take away rights for protection: ex. seatbelt - right to choice, neoliberalism. Protection from government (health care, education, pensions) tax for them. Liberalism - ideology of the free market: responsibilization. Corporates are driven by pro t, not people centred. Not main drive to make you healthy, but to make money (economic driver) Ex. opium responsible on individuals and not by state- problem with this is that the government doesn"t care making it hard for people who don"t have money to get services to help unless they have money. Government not abiding by the social contract.
