WS 206 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Conventionalism, Rosemary West, Sodium Hydride
Document Summary
Male violence has become naturalized in typical media representations (law & order, for example). This means that domestic violence doesn"t get talked about as much as it actually happens. It"s the mysterious person that you don"t know that will jump out of woods and rape you that gets naturalized. Female violence is rare, compared to male violence. The idea is that it"s so rare that it can sell newspapers. This is when female criminals start showing up in papers more often. Second wave feminism was dominant in the 70s. Second wave feminists are the ones that put themselves on the line to get us access to birth control, equal employment, abortions, morning after pill (people used to use castor oil instead). The female criminal started appearing around the same time as these second wave feminists were dominant. The new female criminal is doubly deviant as the transgress both the law and heteronormativity.
