BIOL 1111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Viral Envelope, Viral Disease, Lysogenic Cycle

35 views3 pages
2. Infection of Animals
-virus binds to host using recognition proteins (on host cell) (ex. Adenovirus and poliovirus)
Unenveloped virus
-whole virus taken into host by endocytosis
-virus directs synthesis of new viruses like in bacteria
-specificity in viruses, they can further specify which type of cell they attack one in an organism, and
then take over DNA replication to build new viral cells
Enveloped Virus
-virus binds to host using recognition proteins (ex. Herpes, pox, HIV, influenza)
-fusion of viral envelope with host plasma membrane, opens up and releases viral content into host
-virus directs synthesis of new viruses that push on plasma membrane to bud off membrane around the
viral particle to create the envelope around it
-host cell does not usually die, but if rate of exit is greater than rate of repair host cell can die
Pathogenic viruses
-most viruses are asymptomatic (harmless)
Pathogenic viruses cause disease
-some cause cell death during release of viral progeny
-some release cellular molecules that induce fever or inflammation
-some alter gene function of host cell by integrating into host gene; this can lead to cancer or other
abnormalities due to mis regulation of genes
-some viruses can be used for gene therapy
Latent phase
-viruses remain in cell in an inactive form until triggered to become active (often by stress)
-similar to lysogenic cycle in bacteria
-becomes part of host cell but dormant (not producing viral progeny)
-ex. Herpes virus
