and the role of media in society. Societies, historical and today,
cannot be divorced from their ways of communicating.
•Starting with some basic definitions.
•Communication and media alongside major historical social
change. Example of Gutenberg printing press.
•Highlighting two Canadian communication thinkers: Innis and
McLuhan.
•Canada’s unique communication/media system challenges.
(Chapters 2 & 3 assigned for this week. A lot!)

Some terminology : as per page 33 of the textbook, society refers to the many institutions and relationships within which a large group of people live, within broader society we can also locate the institutions of politics, economics, etc. Communication and media directly impact these realms: politics, media, and the concept of a public sphere, economics, media, and the concept of information society.
