Signal we call sound is our interpretation of compression in the air. Changes of pressure create a pressure wave that travel through the air. Our ears are sensitive to these local changes in air pressure. Sound is vibrations that resonate at specific frequencies. Frequency is simply the number of cycles per second and is measured in hertz (cycles per second) Human speech frequency range is 30hz to 8khz but most of the power is in the 100hz to the 1khz called the centre band. Human hearing frequency range is 20hz to 16khz. Pro equipment will record from 0hz to 24khz and higher. Microphones frequency range caries with product but can be from 10hz to 40khz.
