DRAM 2100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Major Depressive Disorder, Crowdsourcing, Academic Freedom
Document Summary
Many clinical psychology programs follow the scientist-practitioner model. Research informs clinical practice and clinical practice informs research (bidirectional) Efficacy: the success of a particular therapy in a controlled study conducted with clients who meet specific criteria. The success of a therapy in actual clinical settings in which client problems are not limited to pre-determined criteria. Basically, how well therapy works in the real world. Outcome variables can range (knowledge for psychoeducational groups, self-reported symptoms, number of times behaviours occur. Statistical versus clinical significance; one does not infer the other. Efficacy and effectiveness studies demonstrate a trade off between internal and external validity. Internal validity: extent that change in dependent variable is due to change in the independent variable. Areas of research include: ethics, self-care, attitudes towards diversity. Types of ethical dilemmas (ex. multiple relationships in rural vs. urban cities) Training philosophies, specific coursework, opportunities for specialized training, outcome of training efforts, determining competency, effectiveness of supervision models.
