KINE 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Genetic Predisposition, Atherosclerosis, Homocysteine
Document Summary
Chronic diseases: cardiovascular disease & cancer. Required reading: diet and health. Immunity: what are risk factors, cardiovascular disease, cancer, what it is, assessing risk, dietary measures, what it is, nutrition, antioxidants. Contributions: difficult to know the exact contribution of each risk factor. Your own risk factors - think about your own family (parents, grandparents, siblings) Leading cause of death in developed nations: hypertension, not just a man"s disease. If pressure builds up, the artery wall becomes weakened and may balloon out, forming an aneurysm. Heart attacks and strokes can also occur when an artery goes into spasm. Viscous cycle: hypertension and atherosclerosis affect each other. Dietary measures: reduce saturated and trans fats, complex carbohydrates ( fibre), fruits, and vegetables. Cancer development: dna sustains damage from a carcinogen, everyday occurrence, damage quickly repaired. If damage accumulates, cell usually dies off. Sometimes cells can"t die off, and thus replicate with the damage resulting in an abnormal tissue.
