Foundational Principles of Teaching and Learning
- Teaching is an interactive activity that promotes learning.
- Through participation in a successful teaching-learning process, the learner/client gains
new knowledge, skills &/or attitudes that empowers & enables the client to institute
change in his/her life.
- Nurses have an ethical responsibility to teach (CNA Code of Ethics, 2002).
- Effective teaching/learning depends on therapeutic communication in nurse-client
relationship.
- Teaching is only effective when it responds to learner needs & client is motivated to
learn
The Effective Nursing
→ Using the nursing process, facilitates the client’s learning by presenting the:
- Right subject, at the right time, in the right environment, by the right method, in
accordance with the client’s learning goals.

- It is important to understand that there are several levels of cognition
- The nurse must be aware of the depth of learning that is required by the client, &
provide the client with learning experiences that will bring about that level of
learning.

- Requires integration of mental and psychological piece.
- Development requires practice.
Five-Point Summary of Bloom’s Domains of Learning
1. Any teaching topic may involve one or all of the learning domains
2. Cognition is often the first level of focus for learning
3. Psychomotor skill development takes practice.
4. Affect /Attitudinal learning occurs over time & may continue to take place long after
specific teaching learning plan has been implemented.
5. Understanding each learning domain prepares the nurse to select the most appropriate
teaching techniques to bring about accomplishment of learner’s goals.
Learning Depends on One’s:

-Ability to Learn.
- Developmental capacity
- Physical capacity
- Learning style
-Learning Environment.
- Quiet environment
- Eliminate distractions
- Be in the learning mindset
→ It is essential for the nurse to assess these characteristics of each client for whom
he/she intends to provide teaching-learning activities.
