Document Summary

According to hobbes, people are selfish and self interested: people use people as a means of achieving self interested goal, if you"re a hobbesian agent, you are calculated (trying to get ahead) Kant emphasizes duty: either in a state of war or trying to avoid war. Held sees a masculine bias in philosophy: especially picks on hobbes. She says then humans are homunculi (little person inside brain that directs action) Held also notes that kant, hegel and rousseau pay attention to some concerns of women, but little reference to women"s intellectual abilities. Hume was closer to what held endorses. Held: male oriented ethics focuses on (everyone, not individuals) objective conceptions, abstractions etc. Held calls for transformation of moral theory. Kind of communitarian: to a significant extent, he is like aristotle, begins article by noting that some people consider it a virtue, some consider it a vice (patriotism) If push comes to shove, everyone will defend their life.
