PHIL 1290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Deontological Ethics, Mirror Neuron, Consequentialism
Document Summary
Civil state vs. state of war: civil state allows for goals to be completed (in the long term) Fear and liberty are consistent: you would think that they are opposite, only way to allow peace in the long run is through fear. Hobbes view of right and wrong is different than aristotle: right and wrong only exist in civil society. Aristotle emphasizes reason: so does kant. Kant says that generally: intelligence is a good thing. What if you gave to charity to get a tax break: kant says it"s not good because the reason is bad, mixed intentions are bad too. Heteronomy letting others influence your actions (not moral in kant"s eyes because you aren"t doing what"s right because it"s right) Complying with law due to fear is not right. Intend what is right even if it lowers your happiness. Feeling good about doing right thing is only a bonus, not why you should do it.
