PHIL 1290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Moral Nihilism
Document Summary
I"m not going to assume, i"m going to lay out foundation and see where it takes us. Wasserstrom distinguishes types of nihilism: 1) descriptive nihilist. In war, people don"t adhere to moral rules. The world is full of violence : 2) prescriptive nihilist. There shouldn"t be a connection between morality and war. The world should not be full of violence . We should not undermine ourselves by bringing moral concerns in it: 3) analytic nihilist perspective. Conjoining morality and war is meaningless, don"t bother, it"s useless. If the analytic perspective is true, we don"t have to worry about doing inappropriate moral acts in war. We can"t (he says) distinguish those who ran death camps and those canadians that liberated people in netherlands. Not all actions in war are same. Not necessarily the case that everything is permissible in war. Peroqual = tend to be bias when it comes to yourself. Rules of war (don"t use humans as shields etc. )
