PHIL 1290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Surrogacy, Psychometrics, Prior Restraint
Document Summary
Sullivan takes issue with bennet"s point about homosexuality and polygamy. Sullivan replies that almost everyone accepts the fact that gayness occupies a deeper level of consciousness than polygamy. Homosexuality is a matter of one"s primal identity as an individual. Many argue that gay people are born gay. Gayness is a state, whereas polygamy is an activity. Also takes issue with bennet"s claim that he"s a relativist. Says that he is arguing in favour of gay marriage. I am championing marriage and monogamy; i simply want to expand our definition of marriage to include gay persons. Also takes issue with the suggestion that society will fall apart if we accept gay marriage. Accepting a reality that has been the case for centuries does not cause society to fall apart. It"s just a simple way to acknowledge that gay people already exist, not creating a new category. Finally deals with the question of promiscuity of gay men.
