introduction
Political, local, federal, international politics.
Politicians score low on readers digest survey (below sex workers, car salesmen, etc.)
Apathy leads to disengagement which leads to people not voting.
There are cases of corruption but this view is not fair. [accusations of bribery that isn’t true]
Evidence does come to light but it is rare, scores in the top ten of the transparency international.
Over-paided—this is mostly just simple jealousy, they had law practices, businesses, etc. where
they made a lot more money.
Cynical because they believe that politicians lie. By virtue of being in politics, people lie. Force
even honest people to become less honest and even dishonest. They are perceived as liars,
some more than others. [Nobody left to lie to, a book about Clinton presidency] Do things they
wouldn’t do, do something they never mentioned, don’t do something that they did mention.
Canadians believed that corruption was a larger problem in their country than Mexicans in their
own country [judicial, political, police, etc.]
In a democracy, compromise is necessary. Vote for a particular political party based on their
views, beliefs, and promises etc.
Ex.: HST - before HST there was GST and PST there wasn’t federal sales tax (there was it was
just hidden). Election promises to remove good and services sales tax. Deliberate deceit?
Politicians suffer from the Pinocchio syndrome.
What is Politics?
Breakdown of definitions from box 1.1
political science (David Easton) - social systems/religious systems/etc. what distinguishes the
political system from the others is there is a law passed (authoritative allocation) and these rules
apply to everyone, the country as a whole.
political science (Karl Marx) - political power is the organized power of one class over another.
One class suppressing another, systematic and systematic oppression by the bourgeoisie
(capitalist class). They don’t govern and aren’t elected but they rule. Those that do govern act
on the thoughts and ideas of the capitalists. Looking over a socioeconomic landscape, rich are
getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. ECONOMICALLY-BASED INEQUALITY
*political science (second-wave feminism) - the personal is political. Some things are off limits,
different rules apply and the state government shouldn’t make rules. Unequal relations between
males and females are charged by the government. GENDER-BASED INEQUALITY
