In political science it is a valid and useful exercise to categorize and characterize the political culture of states. We do this to understand and anticipate political behaviour and outcomes, and for comparative purposes. But categorizations and characterizations become outdated because people and circumstances change. Over time many lasting and easily understood categorizations and characterizations of the united states" political culture have emerged. In this lesson we take a look at some of them and inquire whether these categorizations and characterizations still apply or whether there is a new way to look at the political culture of the u. s. Many of the characterizations in the chapter associated with this le sson should be familiar to you. Americans better than any others because of shared language, culture and geography, may fall into the trap of viewing the u. s. as a mostly homogeneous body politic or at least one with rigid and permanent divisions.
