Chapter 1: science and the social world (ways of knowing, comparing natural vs. social science, science and politics) Science-a more recent way of knowing: social science is but one way of knowing the world, science is a more recent way of knowing the world, epistemology: is the science of knowing, ways of determining what is known. It refers to truth: ways of knowing include, magic and superstition, religion (texts and religious authorities); as humans develop, they also develop religions. Religion is one way of which people base their decisions and values. Introspection (self knowledge, reflections on things we encounter); what we experience can hold the most power over us. Experience can involve prescientific testing: sometimes we may reconstruct certain things to try and make sense of them, we have theories about many things. Non western ways of knowing: traditional medicines of indigenous people now being researched by western scientists.
