Surveys of 15-17 year olds: significant decline in portion of time for paid jobs, increase in time spent doing leisure activities, from 70s-2000. Why do we participate in clubs/extra-curriculars: making new friends, better resume. Abundance of free time in the lives of contemporary adolescence has several origins: compulsory schooling in the early 20th century. Prior to this, adolescents were working full time, schedules like adults: post - wwii affluence. Families no longer needed teen to bring in income, so income a teen had could be spent on other things; namely, themselves.
