Document Summary
Changes in social definition constitute a third set of fundamental changes that define adolescence. Though societies vary in how the transition from childhood to adulthood is signified, all cultures have some way of recognizing that the individuals" rights and responsibilities have changed once he or she becomes an adult. Changes in social definition may have profound effects on development in the areas of identity, autonomy, inti- macy, sexuality and achievement. Age of majority: the designated age at which an individual is recognized as an adult. Statutory rape: sex between two individuals, even when it is consensual, when at least one of the persons is be- low the legal age of consent. Adolescence lasts longer today than ever before, because young people go through puberty earlier and enter into adult roles of work and family later. Inventionists: theorists who argue that the period of adolescence is mainly a social invention.
