Number of bystanders being observed: response variables. Bystander effect example; if someone is lying down on the street, depending on how many people there are, the human will react differently. In large numbers of people, no one would help. If there were fewer people, the person would help; human beings tend to diffuse responsibility: participant or subject variables. It"s a mental construct that you are trying to measure. Hard to define because of measurement error; leads these variables to be considered erroneous or ambiguous. What you then need to do is operationalize your variable; define how you"re going to measure it. When you write up your observations, you need to operationalize your variables, otherwise your data doesn"t mean anything.
