Test construction involves a feedback loop involving many steps where multiple drafts of a test may be produced: defining the test. Developer needs to have a clear idea of what the test is to measure and how it"s different from existing instruments. Have to show it is different from, and better than, existing measures. Contemporary research continually adds to our understanding of many concepts, all which need to be measured, potentially in new ways as the research turns up. Immediate purpose of psych testing - assign numbers to responses on a test so the examinee can be judged to have more/less of the characteristic measured. Test developers choose a scaling method that is optimally suited to how they"ve conceptualized the desired traits. Levels of measurement: nominal: numbers serve only as category names. Numbers are arbitrary and don"t designate more or less of anything: ordinal: constitutes a form of ordering or ranking.
