Infant and preschool period - birth to 6 years of age. Infants are developing basic reflexes, developmental milestones, learning language, establishing capacity for symbolic thought. Important mainstay for the evaluation of developmental delay in infants and toddlers: 1 month to 42 months of age, cognitive scale, language scale, motor scale, social-emotional, adaptive behaviour, broad range of diverse skills. Differential ability scales-ii: core subtests are primary measures of cognitive abilities (heavy on the g factor) Verbal, nonverbal reasoning, spatial + general conceptual ability. Tuesday, april 19, y: diagnostic subtests provide supplementary info about school readiness and info processing. School readiness, working memory, processing speed: combo of tests used depends on age, ability, and purposes of assessment. Split into characteristics: motor skills, activity level, attention, language. And specific behaviours: consistency in performance, mood, frustration tolerance, motivation, parental behaviours. The purpose of screening is to identify at-risk children so they can be referred for comprehensive evaluation.
