Mood broadly defined as feeling or emotion. Common (3+ million children and teens in us), chronic and disabling. The spectrum runs from severe depression to extreme mania: sadness, loss of interest (anhedonia, irritability (easy annoyance, touchiness - easily upset, temper outbursts, common symptoms, 80% referred; 36% community samples. Then view of depression in childhood as expressed differently, often indirect and hidden ( masked de- pression : any clinical symptom (hyperactivity, learning problems, aggression, separation anxiety, sleep prob- lems) could be sign of underlying but masked depression. We now know that children experience recurrent depression: depression in children isn"t masked, but rather may be overlooked (bc it frequently co-occurs with more visible disorders) Almost all young people experience some symptoms of depression (bc it"s normal) Many experience significant depression at some time displayed as a lasting depressed mood with dis- turbances in thinking, physical functioning and social behaviour. Suicide among teens is a serious concern.
