PSYC 3300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Radical Behaviorism, Behaviorism, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
There is no such thing as personality. Roots in experimentation, behavior, not clinical practice. A particular stimulus will evoke a certain response. Rejected mental events, soul, mind, spirit as an aspect of psychology. Watson"s concept of being able to teach anyone anything was well accepted in the states because of its resemblance to the american dream. Thorndike: law of effect states that behaviors are tied to consequences. If it feels good, it"s more likely to occur. We are surrounded by a consistent set of reward and punishment, so our behavior is consistent. Individuals are extraverted because of positive consequences. However, trial and error is not applicable to many circumstances. Tolman"s latent learning task: getting reward sooner results in fewer errors. However, learning occurs before reward is even given. We engage in behavior for an outcome that never shows up (changing your oil even though you"ve never had a seized up engine): this is expectation learning.
