Definition: the scientific study of the mind, brain and behaviour, a nasty little subject . Five main challenges: humans" behaviour is difficult to predict. Actions are multiply determined: e. g. violence, psychological influences are rarely independent e. g. anorexia nervosa (perfectionism and anxiety) 3. individual differences among people can"t generalize 100% (trying to go from unique to general: people influence one another reciprocal determinism, make someone an introvert/ extrovert, behaviour is shaped by culture emic (insider) vs. etic (outsider) approaches. Boring 1929 originally psychology was a part of philosophy. William wundt created the first psychology lab in 1879 (introspection) There are five primary schools of thought that have shaped modern psychology (sfbcp) Aim: identify the most fundamental elements of psychological experience: systematic observation. Imageless thought brought down the concept of structuralism. William james: original father of psychology. Aim: understand the adaptive purposes of psychological characteristics. Aim: uncovering the general laws of learning by focusing on external observable elements.
