Classic autistic disorder has rates of 2/1000 children. Asd rates are 1/110 (includes asperger"s and pervasive developmental disorder) More common in males 4 or 5:1. 75-80% of children with autism function in the intellectual disability range. Modal iq is in the moderate range. < 1% have savant skills (reading, drawing, arithmetic calculation) Hyperlexia: reading significantly before the typical age. Onset of asd is usually in the first or second year of life. Etiology: not caused by vaccines or bad parenting. Primary or idiopathic (no known cause) autism is most common (80-95%). Syndromic autism is associated with diverse organic etiologies (fragile x, rett syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, nf1, landau-kleffner syndrome, pku, 22q11. 2, microdeletion syndrome)
