PSYC 3580 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Illusory Contours, Outline Of Object Recognition, Sensory Memory

56 views3 pages

Document Summary

Perception: the use of knowledge one already has in order to gather and interpret the stimuli registered by the senses. You can accurately perceive without knowing what something is (seeing a fruit that you have never seen before, and not knowing the name as a result) Object recognition: the process of identifying a complex arrangement of sensory stimuli and perceiving that this pattern is separate from its background. Is not exclusive to vision (object recognition occurs when you hear a baby crying) Sensory memory: large capacity storage system that records information from each of the senses with reasonable accuracy. Partial report effect: illustrates the phenomenon of sensory memory. Participant is shown a large array of many stimuli then he or she is given a prompt and asked if a particular stimulus is in the set. If prompt is varied rather than immediate, information is harder to remember.
