PSYC 4230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Balance Theory, Object Permanence, Egocentrism
Document Summary
John flabel discovered piaget"s work and brought it to north america and promoted it as something that was a new look at cognitive psychology. Cognition was becoming more popular at this time and so people were more accepting towards piaget"s work. If you look really closely, infants are active in exploring their environment. He is a stage theorist and is considered as a discontinuous theorist: discontinuous (stage-like) theorist. Mechanisms of cognitive change: equilibrium: responding to changes in environment in order to maintain a state of cognitive balance. In order to get back into the state of equilibrium, we have 2 mechanisms to do that: assimilation: interpreting new information in terms of what you already know. We already have ways and ideas of understanding the world and things in it, but piaget believed when we gathered new information we are assimilating the new information.
