In order that students are introduced to a scholarly understanding of criminology, this course will introduce various aspects of the sociological study of crime. The course will cover areas of criminology pertaining to the measurement of crime, early and more recent theoretical perspectives of crime, the social construction of crime and criminal laws and empirical research related to each of these areas. Students will be introduced to criminological theory in an attempt to guide a critical explanation and analysis of contemporary crime and criminal law in canada and north america. Note: students are responsible for knowing and adhering to all the procedures, rules, and regulations of the university of windsor. Students are responsible for obtaining and reading all required readings regardless of whether it is covered in class. This course is an introduction to the study of criminology.
