EDUCATION AS AN OBLIGATION? PUBLIC RESPONSES TO MASS PUBLIC  EDUCATION New public system of education: how successful was it?  1.)Popular responses to public education  A.) positive: Maritimes, PEI Agricultural land was filling up. When your parents died, the farm was split up. Smaller and smaller  farms,  we have to stop splitting it up. Instead gave it to one son, the others needed to find things to  do other than farm  PEI: absency land owners. Rich people from Britain and buy up big tracts of land, and rent it out to  farmers who were there.  B.) negative responses: quebec, Ontario Criticized the new system saying it would cost to much Criticized the democratic nature. giving everyone the same education was stupid Thinking of class hierarchy was normal and why would you try to fight that  1846: La Guerre des Eteignoirs: were fighting public education, their opponents said they were  trying to snuff out learning  public taxes to support education:  they look to the catholic church rather than the government  school trustees: elected non qualified school trustees. they id not want to follow the rules  burn down schools  government decides that schooling in general will remain under the churches control. They will still  collect taxes but church wil
