The notion that cognition is information processing is, traditionally, what has de ned cognitive science. We don"t actually know stu , we have weird patterns of things to gure stu out. Animism: assignment of lifelike properties to inanimate but moving objects. 18th century automata were inanimate objects that were able to move and behave but were following a predetermined sequence of behaviour. Grey walter"s tortoises went further in that they mimicked animate beings and were responsive to environmental conditions rather than following a predetermined sequence of behaviours! Forced thinkers to contend with the question of what it means to be alive. Grey walter"s tortoises solved problems and exhibited adaptive behaviour without a computer! Extension of cybernetics - not a computer/computer program. The digital computer allowed for the implementation of logician in machine form. Unlike walter grey"s tortoises, this meant that the digital computer was capable of symbol manipulation and, therefore, of thinking .
