Document Summary

The idea of the state largely originated from plato"s republic created in the 5th bce: this claimed that everything we see or perceive, is a reflection of the perfect form or essence of what we really see. What is certain in politics is the element of power, as without it governments and politicians are not seen as legitimate sources of authority. There are three main dimensions which arise when viewing the power dynamics involved with politics. They are also known as the faces of power: influencing the decision making process, shaping political agendas, influencing people"s thoughts by manipulating their perceptions and preferences. Legitimacy is another concept which arises when viewing power and politics, as stated above. Legitimacy is seen as the quality that transforms naked power into rightful authority" and can be conferred through two forms: willing consent, manufactured by propaganda or ideological domination.
