Deviance is looking at the internalization of criminal values. However, previous theory looks at learning of cultures. Anderson is viewing the content of culture and why it matters to the individuals or community. Community residents are exposed to beliefs that are oppositional to conventional culture. The subculture of violence - people acquire favourable attitudes towards the use of violence through a process of di erential learning > this comes from families, street or decent. The code of the street - it is a violent code which prevails in the inner city and governs the choices that youth make. (set of roles and values). The code of the street is a form of cultural adaption in destitute and urban communities. Informal social control of the community that encourages violence rather then use of law, in communities which have high street families > there is a campaign for respect and status.
