Before 1776, the american colonies were just british colonies: king george iii (1738-1820) was the real power governing the colonies along with his parliament. Since he had divine right, he didn"t think he had to negotiate: after the seven years war, britain became the dominant force in north. America: this war was very costly and since it happened in the colonies, they should be the ones to pay for it. Sugar act 1764: first tax designed specially to raise revenue for the crown. Stamp act 1765: first direct tax; all legal documents in the colonies had to be printed on paper made in london, stamped with a revenue stamp paid for in. As people began to protest against these taxes, the british placed more soldiers in towns and even in people"s homes. The sons of liberty: main protest group.
