Anatomy and Cell Biology 2221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sickle-Cell Disease, Bone Marrow, Progenitor Cell
Document Summary
Week 6: muscles of the lower limb, blood and the vascular system. Plasma 55% (liquid portion) (over 90% is water) Temp of blood is 38 degrees celsius. Males generally have 5-6l of blood, females 4-5l. Regulation of rbc by kidneys with release of hormone epo. White blood cells (wbc) have multiple nuclei. Except for lymphocytes, formed elements do not divide once they leave red bone marrow. Each rbc contains about 280 million hb molecules. At the venter of each heme ring is an iron ion. Hb also transports about 23% of the total carbon dioxide. Hb is what gives rbc their colour. Different wavelengths mean different colours are absorbed between oxygenated and deoxygenated. This is what gives the two their different colours. Biconcave shape allows for rbc to take many different shapes to accommodates capillaries. Sickle cell anemia doesn"t have this shape. The general function of wbc is to combat pathogens by phagocytosis or immne responses.
