Anatomy 9501: Lower Limb Lecture 1 Pelvic Girdle & Lumbosacral Plexus
Lower Limb Design/Comparison to UL
The lower limb has bipedal posture and it is weight bearing. This means we have…
1. Solid and stable connection to the vertebral column
2. Large bones and muscles to support this
Foot vs. Hand? Both hands and feet have lots of bones (27 in the hand, 26 in the foot) but
you don’t want as much intricate movements in the foot. We want a very solid platform for
where we place our weight.
Regions, Bones, & Joints
There are 4 main regions of the lower limb:
Gluteal
Thigh
Leg
Foot
NOTE: Sacroiliac joint and the hip makes
up our pelvic girdle
Development & Limb Rotation
As we develop in utero, our
limbs develop from buds to full
limbs with joints
LL starts a week after UL and we see this process after about 5 weeks of development
Limb buds grow
Limb buds grow outwards and start to face ant. (about 5-6th week)
We start to see joints in the limbs palms and dorsum of the feet face medially
towards each other
UL laterally rotates
LL medially rotates
Os Coxae (Innominate bone)
This is in the pelvic area made up of 3 fused bones:
1. Ilium
2. Ischium
3. Pubis
** These are all fibrous joints that don’t allow much movement.
Innominate means no movement.
NOTE: The black line in this picture is representing vessels travelling down past the pelvis into the leg.
It travels downwards medially and bifurcates to get both a left and a right
Image? This is showing angle of the coccyx as it travels off of the sacrum
Sacroiliac
Hip
Knee
Ankle & Talar joint
Sup. & Inf. tibiofibular
The pelvis is 2 innominate bones!
