Anatomy and Cell Biology 2221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Epiglottis, Skeletal Muscle, Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Document Summary
Breaks food into nutrient molecules, absorb and eliminates: vestibule: space inside lips/cheeks but outside of teeth, oral cavity proper: space inside of teeth. Palatopharyngeal arch: achnor soft palate to wall of oropharynx. Hard palate: surface where tongue force food during chewing, made by palate process of maxillae and horizontal plates of palatine bones. Soft palate: mobile flap, rise to close nasopharynx during swallowing. Terminal sulcus: border b/w mouth & pharynx: circumvallate papillae: border terminal sulcus (>100 taste buds, foliate papillae: ridges on side (>100 taste buds, fungiform papillae: mushroom shape (3-5 taste buds, filiform papillae: roughen tongue (no taste buds) Motor innervation tongue: hypoglossal nerve: intrinsic and extrinsic muscle of tongue. Intrinsic muscle: in tongue not attached bone, change shape tongue. Extrinsic muscle: attach tongue to bone, alter position. Genioglossus -palatoglossus: facial nerve: taste, trigeminal nerve: sensation, glossopharyngeal nerve: sensation/taste for posterior 1/3 tongue. Sialography: radiographic exam of salivary glands, look for obstruction.
