Anatomy and Cell Biology 2221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Dopaminergic Cell Groups, Nucleus Accumbens, Striatum
Document Summary
Motivation: behaviours that lead to the reductions of needs of our bodies ! Reward: system causes feelings of pleasure and joy ! Important for the survival of an individual/species - feeding, mating, foraging, resting! Mostly guided by hormones and hypothalamus ! Important because it"s positive reinforcement of behaviours that lead to the reward! Positive behaviour mediated by mesolimbic dopamine system ! continue to do it that way individual can survive ! Motivated behaviours that lead to reward will be positively reinforced to ensure species will. Nd dopaminergic neurons in two places: Ventral tegmental area (vta) Black structure because it contains neurons that contain melatonin. These axons of these two sensors of dopaminergic neurons merge together in one stream. Sn neurons project to dorsal striatum. Nigrostriatal dopaminergic projec=on is involved in regula=ng and ini=a=ng motor behaviour (not the reward system) Neurons in the vta are important for reward system. Axons project primarily into ventral striatum (nucleus accumbens)
