Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Muscularis Mucosae, Submucosa, Histology
Document Summary
Underneath is eosinohphillic region - can be separated into a darker portion and lighter portion. Lighter band right underneath epithelium is smooth muscle - the muscularis mucosa. On outside we have the muscularis externes - longitudinal outer layer, inner circular layer. Cells change shape up to the top where there are squamous cells - non-keratinized. Adjacent to that is the lamina propria (reddish staining) - loose ct. Then see smooth muscle underneath that - muscularis external. Together the muscularis mucosa, the lamina propria, and the epithelium make up the mucosa. Adjacent to the muscularis mucosa you have dict with thicker collagen bundles and blood vessels - this is the submucosa. There are nerve bundles here - these are part of meissner"s plexus. Here we see the mucularis externa on the left. In the esophagus this area has 3 different regions characterized by type of muscle.
