Document Summary

Explain how smell is relayed from the olfactory epithelium to the brain. Describe the cause and effects of the anosmia. Describe the morphology of the 4 tongue papillae. Explain how taste is relayed from the tongue to the brain. A sensation produced when odorant molecules react chemically with olfaction (smell) receptors. Cranial nerve i or the olfactory nerve is related to olfaction. It consists of the olfaction bulb & olfaction tract. The olfactory bulbs are located at the base of the frontal cerebral cortex, and can be seen on the inferior view. The nasal cavity is made of the inferior concha (closest to the nares), middle concha, and superior concha. Note: the concha are actually bones: inferior nasal concha is a standalone bone, while the middle and superior concha are parts of the ethmoid bone. At the top of the superior concha is the olfactory epithelium. The olfactory epithelium is separated from the olfactory bulb by the cribriform plate.
