Document Summary

There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves (numbered in a rostral to caudal direction) that attach to the brain and pass through foramina in the skull. The first two pairs attach to the forebrain, the rest to the brain stem. The vagus nerve extends to the abdomen, but all the other ones innervate only the head and neck. Cns vs pns cns = brain + spinal cord, pns = cranial nerves + spinal nerves: olfactory, optic, oculomotor, trochlear, trigeminal, abducens, facial, vestibulocochlear, glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory, hypoglossal. : provides nervous innervation to head and neck. Somatic motor ex. eye movements, mastication, facial expression, tongue movement. Parasympathetic (visceral motor) ex. pupillary constriction, lens focusing, salivary and lacrimal glands. Cranial nerves originate from within the cranium ventral surface of the brain (forebrain), ventral surface of the brainstem. Exceptions trochlear originates from the dorsal surface of the brainstem.
