Document Summary
A network of nervous tissue in your body that allows you to react to changes in your internal and external environment. Ex baroreceptors detect blood pressure and signal other things to somehow increase or decrease blood pressure internal stimulus. Ex skin tells if its cold or not and if you should wear a sweater external stimulus. The nervous system has three general functions: sensory input (afferent): information gathered by sensory receptors, sight, smell, touch, pain, taste, temperature. Reflex arcs: signal does not travel to the brain, fast and important for survival. Central nervous system: comprises of the brain & spinal cord, integrating & command centre of the nervous system, receives incoming sensory input, interprets these signals & dictates motor responses. Peripheral nervous system: nerves (cranial and spinal) & ganglia (collection of neural cell bodies in a specific region, communication lines that link all regions of the body to the cns.
