Feel free to email me (oneclass512475@gmail. com) if you have any questions or don"t understand something! Describe and locate the components of the diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus) Describe role of thalamus including a general discussion of the major nuclei contained in there. Relay nuclei for all sensory input coming into the brain, and are projected to the appropriate regions within the cerebral cortex for higher processing. Left & right thalamus is connected by the interthalamic adhesion at the midline. Clusters of neurons exist in the thalamus, each responsible for receiving and processing different types of information towards different sensory cortex. Ventral posterolateral nucleus (vpn) sensory information projected to primary sensory cortex. Lateral geniculate nucleus (lgn) visual information projected to primary visual cortex. Medial geniculate nucleus (mgn) auditory information projected to auditory cortex: the lgn and mgn are present on the posterior side of the thalamus. Located between the optic chiasm and the mammillary body.
