Anatomy NotesFeb 1412 At the splitting of the common carotid artery the internal carotid artery forms the carotid sinus which is the location of baroreceptors for monitoring blood pressure The internal carotid artery passes anterior to the transverse processes of the upper 3 cervical vertebrae It enters the inferior skull through the carotid canal in the petrous portion of the temporal bone It travels medially and superiorly through the petrous bone to enter the cranial cavity near the foramen lacerum Once inside the crania cavity the internal carotid gives off several branchesthe anterior cerebral artery middle cerebral artery and posterior communicating artery Each anterior cerebral artery anastomoses with its partner on the opposite side through an anterior communicating artery and supplies the medial and superior surfaces of the frontal and parietal lobes Each middle cerebral artery supplies the lateral parts of the temporal and parietal lobes The rest of the cerebrum is supplied by the posterior cerebral artery The blood supply to the posterior brain comes from the right and left vertebral arteries which arise from the subclavian arteries They enter the skull through the foramen magnum and send branches to the vertebrae and cervical spinal cord The right and left vertebral arteries join to form the basilar artery At the pons and midbrain the basilar artery divides into a pair of posterior cerebral arteries which supply the occipital lobes and part of the temporal lobes Short posterior communicating arteries connect the posterior cerebral arteries to the middle cerebral arteries anteriorly The two posterior communicating arteries and the one anterior communicating artery complete the formation of an anastomosis called the cerebral arterial circle or the circle of willis The circle of willis is formed anteriorly from branches of the internal carotid artery and posteriorly from branches PCA of the basilar artery The circle of willis is composed of Anteriorlybranches derived directly from the internal carotid artery including the anterior cerebral a
