Cultural anthropologists have studied mortality less than fertility (bledsoe and hirschman 1989). Mortality is more dif cult to research in a typical eldwork period. In a year, several births might occur in a village of 1000 people, while fewer infant deaths will occur and perhaps no murders or suicides. Another reason for the difference in research emphasis between fertility and mortality is the greater availability of funding for fertility studies, given the worldwide concern with population growth and family planning. Cultural factors often put certain people more at risk. Causes of death can be analyzed on several levels. For of dying from a certain cause and at a particular age than others. Levels of causality considered in population studies are proximate, intermediate, and ultimate causes. A proxi- mate cause is the one that is closest to the actual out- come.
