The pedestrian survey (surface survey): basic starting point for an archaeologist in assessing a potential site is to simply conduct an organized surface survey of the site, usually done in a patterned manner. Other technological innovations in archaeology: the use of metal detectors, geomagnetic surveys: the use of magnetometers or gradiometers. Measures variability or disturbances in earth"s magnetic field. Look at landscape patterning to look for sediments etc: digital surveying: mapping with gps coordinates (digital mapping) Layers of images landscape arch: electromagnetic resistance surveying, ground penetrating radar (gpr, aerial surveying (can use aerial photography or satellite images) Evidence of neolithic structures in southern england was uncovered with aerial photography.
