Ebonics (a mixture of ebony and phonics) is the same as african american vernacular english. Ebonics is a dialect since it shares most of its vocabulary and features with other informal english varieties and its speakers can understand, and be understood by, other english dialect speakers. Slang refers only to a small set of informal words used by young speakers of a language that is not part of the main vocabulary. however, ebonics has non-slang words as well as some distinct pronunciations and syntax.
