Lecture 10: language and identity: class and region. Describe and give examples of methods for studying regional and class variations in speech. Identify language ideologies underlying attitudes toward people from different regions or social classes. All speakers can make linguistic choices: different languages, different people, different effects. Identify as doing not being: multiple identities, accomplished in interaction, an active strategic activity, other ways to study identity. Links between language and identity learned through language socialization processes in. Communities of practice: a group of people who interact for a shared purpose and whose interactions produce a shared mode of communication. That could get you a job if you knew someone who is in position of power: do you know how to speak in a professional manner. Idea that beautiful people have it easier in life. Important concept: isogloss, sound change: line of best fit to show the correlation between variables, sound changes everywhere, differences are never absolute.
