In the first chapter of anne of green gables, marilla explains to mrs. rachel. Lynde that she and matthew have decided to adopt a boy: at first matthew suggested getting a barnado boy (in some editions, editors have changed the words barnado boy to home boy ). What marillla is referring to is a program developed by a british philanthropist named thomas barnardo. This man arranged for the adoption of over 100, 000 children who were taken from lower-class homes in london, england and sent to farming families in canada, new zealand, and australia. Health secretary has issued an apology to these people because many of them were not orphans at all, but simply poor children who were taken from their parents. The apology acknowledges the fact that nearly two thirds of the children were eventually abused, either physically or sexually, and virtually all of them were exploited as cheap farm labour.
