Anthropology 2218F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cultural Appropriation, The Stereotypes, Indigenous Rights
Document Summary
Indigenous people have the lowest rates of alcohol and drug abuse on north america: the highest is attributed to caucasians. Why were they thought to be lazy: when the europeans came, they saw the indigenous bath everyday. To the europeans, this meant that they had enough time in the day to spend bathing. It"s easy to ignore the issue when the focus is on the people themselves: headdresses, face paint. Spiritual: not defining as a way of life. Seen as pagan and primitive to not have a religion. Prisons: over representation in the prison system. Many are targeted based on the fact that they are indigenous. The ones that have the problem are the big companies that charge more for their cigarettes. If first nations are to be considered separate nations then why are they governed by. Indian giver: someone that gives something and then takes it back.
