Anthropology 2229F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Star Carr, North American Land Mammal Age, Permanent Teeth
Document Summary
We want to know the ages and sexes of animals in faunal assemblages. Sexing animals - sometimes based on differences in size and skeletal features. E. g. dealing with horses - their teeth lack incisors or rather canines. Dentition - for young animals can estimate age based on which permanent teeth have erupted Fusion of epiphyses (bone plates at the ends of immature long bones) If epiphyses are unfused - immature animal mature animal. Catastrophic age pro le is one which accurately re ects the distribution of ages in a living population. Results from a mass kill or natural disaster. Attritional age pro le - a lot of young and older individuals; fewer individuals in the prime of life. I. e. at starr carr - half the red deer in the collection are in the 3-4 age range. Woven into the seasonal round and cultural system.
