Lecture 2 advantages of archaeology, major goals of archaeology & history of archaeology y advantages of having archaeology as part of anthropology: time depth/long-term changes. proves change over time; easier to study cultural changes. causes/processes of long term change are different that the causes/processes of short term change: overcomes biases in written records. people making the observation are bias; didn t try to understand other peoples, usually demeaning. learn little of daily life of the people from written records, not recorded; usually only wrote about major events: representativeness of information base. generalizations only as good as your information base. up to about 10,000 years ago, all humans were hunter- gatherers/foragers. have to be based on an unbiased sample: why is culture the mechanism human groups have used to survive. have to see how it arose in the first place.
